- Marca’s Alberto Ortega remembers the red card the Chilian received two years ago vs Los Blancos
- Real Madrid should be wary of Barca’s new arrival
“If Barcelona complete the signing of Arturo Vidal, it would bring one of the Champions League’s biggest personal duels to LaLiga as the Chilean again faces up to Real Madrid. It all began in the 2016/17 quarter-finals in which Bayern Munich led Los Blancos 1-0 during the first leg in Bavaria. After winning a penalty, the side elected Vidal to step up but he drilled his shot over the bar. In the second half, Bayern capitulated with Javi Martinez sent off amid Cristiano Ronaldo’s match winning double.
“The Chilean’s experience against Real didn’t improve in Spain, with the tie balanced 3-3 on aggregate when his ball winning challenge on Marco Asensio earned a second yellow card. Madrid would score three more goals into extra-time. ‘This robbery cannot happen in the Champions League,’ fumed Vidal post-match with Thiago and Robert Lewandowski joining him in venting their anger at referee Viktor Kassai in his dressing room.
“Fast forward to the 2017/18 campaign and the two clubs met in Europe again, this time with Vidal ruled out through injury. That simply enabled him to track Los Blancos’ late win against his former club Juventus in the previous round, Ronaldo’s penalty generating a disappointed reaction as he watched on a laptop in the Allianz Arena stands.
“Vidal tweeted his excitement at getting a second pop at Real when the semi-final draw was made but the missed handball of Marcelo angered the injured midfielder once again, posting on Instagram that the referee was a ‘criminal s**t’. Should he complete his switch to the Camp Nou, fans can expect more fireworks in the upcoming Clasico matches, which Vidal will no doubt be desperate to play in.”
